There are now several document viewer systems available that allow a book to be published as a single file that can be downloaded and viewed with a viewer program, but the file itself cannot be changed.

  1. Adobe Acrobat Publisher - this is a commercial program that allows you to create text on your word processor, print it using a special printer driver, and create a .PDF file. Anyone with the Acrobat reader can read the files.

However, you cannot password protect parts of the file. Also the PDF format is intended for printing - it does not display well on a screen. The print is too small when the full page is viewed, and when the page is zoomed to make the letters legible the right hand side of the page disappears.

  2. Word Perfect Viewer and Microsoft Viewer. Both these are provided by the vendors of the word procession programs of the same name. You save your file in the word processor format, distribute it with the viewer program.

However, the file format can be read by the word processor that created it, so anyone with the same word processor can modify the file. Also you cannot password protect parts of the file.

  3. Microsoft Help Files. These can be produced provided you have a word processor that supports RTF format, plus you need the help compiler from Microsoft. You can then distribute the help file, and anyone with a Windows system can read the files, but cannot change them.

However, it is not easy to produce Help files. Also you cannot password protect parts of the file.

  4. Publisher Suite from Fugue Software. This format allows you to put standard HTML files with graphics into a single file. Anyone with the (free) viewer program can view the file contents. The file is encrypted, so the contents cannot be loaded into a word processor. Individual pages can be password protected, so that they cannot be viewed without the password (very useful if you want payment for your work). Each file contains a signature of the registered owner, and cannot be changed by any other copy of the publisher program. You can download an evaluation copy of Publisher Suite

Because you can password protect parts of the book, you can distribute the full book with some chapters protected, and request a payment for a password that will permit a person to view the other chapters. Each person can have a different password.

You can also download books in EBK format.

  5. There are other commercial packages coming out in the near future. We'll let you know more when we find out more.
